AS9102

Aerospace First Article Inspection Requirement

Current Edition Checked October 24, 2026

Revision C aligned the report more closely with AS9100 production process verification and removed the signature fields from Forms 2 and 3.

What It Covers

The process and report that prove a new production process makes a part that meets every design characteristic, and that it is repeated when the process changes.

Who It Applies To

Aerospace manufacturers and their suppliers, for new parts and after changes to design, process, tooling, location or a lapse in production.

Key Requirements

  • Form 1, Part Number Accountability: the part, its sub-assemblies, and the reason for a full or partial FAI.
  • Form 2, Product Accountability: materials, special processes and functional tests, with their certifications.
  • Form 3, Characteristic Accountability: every design characteristic, ballooned and measured.
  • Partial or full re-inspection when a change affects the characteristics.

What an Auditor Asks to See

  • A complete FAI package with the ballooned drawing.
  • What triggered your last partial FAI.

Where Systems Fall Short

  • Characteristics missed because notes and specifications were not ballooned.
  • FAIs not repeated after a production lapse longer than the customer allows.

How QES Helps

FAI procedures written to Revision C, with reviews of reports before they reach the customer.
